Challenge
Patient-Led Content Creation
Penn State Health Children's Hospital and the Four Diamonds Fund wanted to create an authentic, patient-led podcast that would allow young adult cancer survivors to share their unique journeys. The challenge was ensuring these deeply personal stories were conveyed with sensitivity, while still being relatable and engaging to a broader audience of young adults.
Community Engagement & Reach
Beyond simply producing the podcast, Penn State Health needed to build a supportive community around the series. They sought to create a space where young adults could connect, share experiences, and find emotional and practical guidance through their cancer journeys. The challenge was not only producing engaging content but ensuring it resonated with and reached the right audience.
Solutions
Solutions
Podcast Production & Location Recording
Working closely with cancer survivors and medical professionals, the team produced the 'Life on Pause' podcast. On-location recording captured candid conversations, maintaining authenticity. These natural settings provided a comfortable environment, ensuring genuine storytelling.
Content Marketing Strategy
A tailored content marketing strategy was developed to promote the podcast through multiple channels. This included the Penn State Health website, newsletters, and social media platforms, all designed to engage with both current patients and a broader audience. Focusing on storytelling and support, the campaign positioned the podcast as a resource for young adults facing similar challenges.
Cross-Platform Distribution
To maximize reach, the podcast was made available on a dedicated website and distributed across major podcast platforms and on YouTube. This approach ensured that listeners could easily access episodes on the platforms they preferred, whether they were exploring cancer survivorship for the first time or seeking a sense of community.
Outcomes
Increased Awareness & Community Growth
Successfully raising awareness, the 'Life on Pause' podcast connected with young adult cancer survivors, building a supportive community in the process. By offering relatable, heartfelt stories and practical advice, the podcast resonated strongly with listeners, creating an engaged and growing audience. Young adults, caregivers, and healthcare providers formed a supportive community, increasing both listenership and online engagement.
Long-Term Impact
Beyond its initial success, the podcast has had a lasting impact on its listeners, continuing to grow and evolve as an essential resource for young adults with cancer. The ongoing distribution and marketing efforts have kept the conversation going, making "Life on Pause" a cornerstone of Penn State Health’s commitment to patient-centered care.

Great Program!
“This is incredibly informative for me and helps me to understand my sister’s experience with leukemia as a young adult. I love that this is a resource to help families and friends to understand someone’s experience with leukemia, as well as for those going through treatment/post-treatment who aren’t completely comfortable with going to a support group but want to hear people who have gone through similar experiences.”
