The top LGBTQ podcasts we’re listening to in 2021

It’s June, which means it’s Pride month. As the final days of June tick off the calendar and local Pride events wrap up, it’s important to keep that energy up for the rest of the year. To help celebrate Pride month, I asked some of the staff here at Q’d Up to tell me about their favorite LGBTQ podcasts and content creators.

While this is certainly not an exhaustive list of LGBTQ podcasts and hosts, this is a chance to expand your podcast playlists. We’re always looking for more podcasts to listen to here at Q’d Up, so if you’ve got any LGBTQ podcasts or hosts you want to highlight, let us know in the comments.

And That’s Why We Drink

It’s a podcast that blends true crime with the supernatural/paranormal extremely well. Em Schulz (the nonbinary podcaster) does the paranormal segment while Christine Schiefer does the true crime segment. It can be challenging to combine those two into one episode, but they pull it off fabulously. On top of that, it’s hilarious. You wouldn’t expect that from a podcast which such hard (and sometimes gory) subject matter but Em and Christine love to intertwine stories about their own lives. They actually won an award for “best comedy podcast” despite their content being about crime.

LGBTQ&A

Created to document modern LGBTQ+ history, LGBTQ&A is a weekly interview podcast that sits down with the most interesting people currently fighting for equality. From presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg and his husband Chasten to trans television and movie star Laverne Cox, host Jeffrey Masters is an amazing interviewer that clearly does his homework and knows how to make his guests feel welcome enough to go beyond the surface-level talk so many other shows struggle with.

Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness

I recently came across the podcast Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness. I love learning about niche topics that I wouldn’t know too much about otherwise so this is a great podcast for me. I also really enjoy Jonathan’s genuine interest in all the topics being discussed on the podcast – it makes it very exciting to listen to!

Making Gay History

I found Making Gay History the podcast a few months ago and can’t get through it fast enough. The podcast is an incredible auditory experience that contextualizes archived interviews, transcripts and eye witness reports to history-making moments and people. The podcast brings to life the tapes of  Eric Marcus and Studs Terkel, who interviewed LBGTQ icons that were either out or closeted in their time. Some of the language can be dated but that’s the point: we can hear history unfolding in front of us. The podcast really shows that LBGTQ history is our history.
