Social Media Marketing For Podcasters: How To Grow Your Podcast With Social Media

Social media is just one of the tools in the podcasters toolbox but it can be a very valuable (and free) one. However, there’s more to social media marketing than just spamming your episode link on every platform and crossing your fingers.

On this week’s episode of the Q’d Up Podcast on Podcasting, hosts Matthew Stevens and John Luckenbaugh take a deep dive into social media. John and Matt talk about how you should handle your profiles and tone on each platform, as well as how to get your audience to do what you want them to. In addition, Matt and John break down some interesting news about how radio listeners are flocking to podcasts and Joe Rogan being dethroned by YouTuber Markiplier.

Show highlights:

Introduction

Radio listeners flocking to podcasts (1:03)

According to Techsurvey 2021, AM/FM radio listeners have been listening to podcasts more and more. With some saying podcasts are cutting into their radio habits, could we be seeing the beginning of podcasting truly taking over for traditional radio? Matt and John take a closer look at the survey and what it could mean for both radio and podcast in the coming years.

YouTuber Markiplier dethrones Joe Rogan as the top podcast (11:14)

Famous YouTuber, Markiplier, has started his own podcast which has managed to garner quite a bit of attention. Almost immediately, “Distractable” shot up the Spotify and Apple charts, claiming the top spot away from Joe Rogan. John and Matt take a look at what the “Distractable” podcast is about and how it was able to achieve so much interest but dropped off just as quickly.

Social Media Marketing: Should you have separate or combined profiles? (18:11)

One of the top questions we get at Q’d Up is if podcasts need separate social media accounts or if they should be combined with the larger brand. Matt and John discuss the pros and cons of each and the situations that make the most sense to combine or separate your social media marketing.

Social Media Marketing: Matching tone (22:16)

Now that you’ve got your podcast on the various social media platforms, should each platform get the same content? The short answer is no, probably not. Matt breaks down why it’s important to take a closer look at each platform and your audience to tailor your content to match them.

Social Media Marketing: Call to action (25:32)

What do you want your listeners and fans to do? That’s likely going to be your call to action. It could be as simple as reminding them to listen to your newest episode or to rate you on their platform of choice, but with a good call to action, you can engage with your audience to get them to do something for you.

Social Media Marketing: Strategy (27:50)

You’ve finally got your social media accounts set up, the graphics created, tone set, and an idea of what you want users to do. Now, how can you apply it all together to create a social media marketing strategy? Matt and John touch on the various types of posts podcasters should be using to create better engagement and improve their cross promotion.

Social Media Marketing: Best times to post (35:31)

Another question we get a ton here at Q’d Up is when podcasters should be posting on social media. While there’s no easy answer as it’s dependent on your specific audience, there are some good rules to follow to get started before you can track your own metrics.
